Beginnings of VanDemark & Lynch, Inc.

VanDemark & Lynch was founded in 1937 by Ernest S. VanDemark and Frank T. Lynch, respected professionals with a strong commitment to precision and an equally strong work ethic.

Early on, we were engaged mainly in boundary surveying in and around Wilmington, Delaware, and operated from the home of Mr. Lynch.  During World War II we expanded and diversified our services to include the design of, and construction supervision for, wartime housing developments; a resilient achievement considering Mr. Lynch was overseas on active duty with the U.S. Army at the time.

In 1955, the firm purchased a residence at 311 West 12th Street and remodeled it into an office building.  Personnel was being added, notably LeRoy M. Haitsch, a veteran surveyor, Werner C. Lehm, an engineer educated in Germany, and Calvin J. Lowe, Jr., and the firm continued to expand.

In 1970, the firm relocated from its office on West 12th Street in Wilmington to our Miller Road location where we currently operate today. Welcoming like-minded professionals, the VanDemark & Lynch company has become a trusted source for ever-larger assignments, working on some of the most important public and private projects of the past half-century.

In 1980 performing complex surveying procedures off-shore is more than a matter of simply taking land-based skills and adding water. This specialized area requires a unique set of tools, techniques, and expertise. That is why VanDemark & Lynch, Inc. has become a preferred provider of engineering and hydrographic surveying services. Through the outstanding work of our engineering specialists, V&L has developed a client list that includes large corporations and government agencies, such as the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the U. S. Coast Guard. Our Services have been applied to a variety of riparian, coastal zone, and marine projects, and include: Hydrographic Surveys, bulkhead, dike and pier design, placement of navigational aids, marine structures design, erosion control, flood plain analysis, and permit application.

In 1990 VanDemark & Lynch, Inc. had acquired the hardware necessary to upgrade most of our drafters to AutoCAD v10 along with other drafting and engineering software.  While still employing some of the best drafters and engineers in the business, we used this relatively new technology, in tandem with advances in survey data collection, to improve our efficiency in completing projects, and our speed and accuracy in field surveying.

In 2000 with the advances in electronic surveying, computer technology, and satellite surveying, we continue to lead this on the strength of our trained eye and experienced judgment. VanDemark & Lynch’s surveying, engineering & landscape professionals have added value to all types of projects, including Hydrographic Surveys, Bulkhead, dike, and pier design, Placement of navigational aids, Marine Structures design, Erosion control, Flood analysis, Facility, Permit application.

In 2011, VanDemark & Lynch acquired Steinle Construction Engineers (SCE) to add structural engineering to our capabilities.  SCE began business over 20 years ago and primarily serves Governmental, Industrial, Construction, and Commercial Clients, and is uniquely qualified because it provides both structural engineering and building code review services with our in-house staff.  We concentrate in providing structural designs for new construction, renovations, repairs, replacements and improvements to institutional, industrial and commercial buildings and facilities. SCE is a structural firm, that provides quality services with the full expression of the project goals at a reasonable cost while maintaining a timely delivery.

For over eight decades, VanDemark & Lynch has helped builders, developers, property owners, and government agencies maximize their land-based investments through precision and mapping services. With the advances in electronic surveying, computer technology, and satellite surveying, we continue to lead this area on the strength of our trained eyes and experienced judgment.
